Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) Alpha 3

(2010.02.25)

Introduction
The Ubuntu developers are moving quickly to bring you the absolute latest and greatest software the Open Source community has to offer. The Lucid Lynx Alpha 3 is the third alpha release of Ubuntu 10.04, bringing with it the earliest new features for the next version of Ubuntu.

This is an alpha release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released on April 29, 2010.

Upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 or Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
To upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 on a desktop system, press Alt+F2 and type in "update-manager -d" (without the quotes) into the command box. Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release '10.04' is available. Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

To upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 on a server system: install the update-manager-core package if it is not already installed; edit /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades and set Prompt=normal; launch the upgrade tool with the command sudo do-release-upgrade -d; and follow the on-screen instructions.

New features in Lucid
Feature development for Lucid is happening with full speed. Please see the Lucid blueprint list for details.

Please test and report any bugs you find:

http://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

Updated Packages
As with every new release, packages--applications and software of all kinds--are being updated at a rapid pace. Many of these packages come from an automatic sync from Debian's Testing branch. For a list of all packages being accepted for 10.04 Lucid Lynx, please subscribe to lucid-changes:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/lucid-changes

GNOME
Ubuntu Lucid Alpha 3 includes the latest GNOME desktop environment with a number of great new features.

Linux kernel 2.6.32
Alpha 3 includes the 2.6.32-14.20 kernel based on 2.6.32.8.

KDE SC 4.4
Alpha 3 of Kubuntu features the new KDE SC 4.4. For more information about new features in Kubuntu, see https://wiki.kubuntu.org/LucidLynx/Alpha3/Kubuntu.

Hal removal
Lucid Alpha 3 sports full removal of the hal package, making Ubuntu faster to boot and faster to resume from suspend.

Major new version of likewise-open
The likewise-open package, which provides Active Directory authentication and server support for Linux, has been updated to version 5.4. The package supports upgrades from both the officially supported versions 4.0 (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS) and 4.1 (Ubuntu 9.10), as well as the likewise-open5 packages from universe.

Since this upgrade involves a lot of configuration file changes and in-place database upgrades, testing and feedback is appreciated.

New default open source driver for nVidia hardware
The Nouveau video driver is now the default for nVidia hardware. This driver provides kernel mode setting, which will give improved resolution detection. This driver provides hardware accelerated 2D functionality, like the -nv driver it replaces. The nouveau driver is being actively developed upstream and we anticipate this will enable faster bug fixes for problems encountered.

Improved support for nVidia proprietary graphics drivers
Three different NVIDIA proprietary drivers are currently available: nvidia-current (190.53), nvidia-173, and nvidia-96. Thanks to a new alternatives system, it is now possible to install all three of these packages at the same time (although it is only possible to have one configured for use at a time).

Social By Default
We now feature built in integration with Twitter, identi.ca, Facebook, and other social networks with the MeMenu in the panel, which is built upon the Gwibber project, which has a completely new, more reliable backend built on top of desktopcouch. Gwibber now also supports a multi-column view for monitoring multiple feeds simultaneously.

New features for Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC)
The Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud installer has been vastly improved in order to support alternative installation topologies. UEC components are now automatically discovered and registered, including for complex topologies. Finally, UEC is now powered by Eucalyptus 1.6.2 codebase.

Issue when upgrading from Lucid Alpha 2
If you installed Lucid prior to Alpha 3, you may have libmysqlclient16 7.0.9-1 installed. This package was present in the Ubuntu archive by mistake and was retracted, but because it has a later version number than the real libmysqlclient16 package, the real package will not be installed automatically on upgrade. To ensure that you have the official package installed on your Lucid system and will receive security support for it throughout Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, please run sudo apt-get install libmysqlclient16/lucid and follow the instructions.

Known issues
As is to be expected at this stage of the release process, there are several known bugs that users are likely to run into with Lucid Alpha 3. We have documented them here for your convenience along with any known workarounds, so that you don't need to spend time reporting these bugs again:

    * On video hardware that supports KMS, the live CD sometimes does not reboot successfully, instead displaying the boot logo indefinitely. To work around this, you will need to power down the system manually. Investigation of this issue is ongoing. As a workaround, users can boot from a USB stick instead of from a CD. (506418)

    * When running on Ubuntu Server, the plymouth boot splash screen does not exit after the system is booted. To get to a console login after boot, you must press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to VT1. Work on correcting this for the 10.04 release is ongoing. (506297)

    * Console keyboard selections made at install time may not be correctly respected on reboot, leaving users with the default US keyboard map. This issue affects all images, but is mostly of concern to users of Ubuntu Server. This bug is expected to be resolved shortly after Alpha 3. (524439)

    * Because of the new alternatives system used for nvidia driver packages, the nvidia installer from NVIDIA's website currently doesn't work.

    * The fglrx binary driver for ATI video chipsets does not yet support the X server in Lucid. As a workaround, users should use the open source -ati driver instead. (506656)

    * OEM setup mode does not work from the Alpha 3 Desktop CD, because the post-reboot configuration tool is not present. As a workaround, users can use the alternate CD for OEM installs. (527641)

Reporting bugs
It should come as no surprise that this alpha release of Lucid Lynx contains other bugs. Your comments, bug reports, patches and suggestions will help fix bugs and improve future releases. Please report bugs using the tools provided.

Pidgin 2.6.6

(2010.02.18)

Changes in 2.6.6

* libpurple
- Fix 'make check' on OS X. (David Fang)
- Fix a quirk in purple_markup_html_to_xhtml that caused some messages to be improperly converted to XHTML.
- Set "controlling-mode" correctly when initializing a media session. Fixes receiving voice calls from Psi.
- When looking up DNS records, use the type of record returned by the server (instead of the type we asked for) to determine how to process the record.
- Fix an issue with parsing XML attributes that contain "<br>". See ChangeLog.API for more details.

* General
- Correctly disable all missing dependencies when using the --disable-missing-dependencies option. (Gabriel Schulhof)

* Gadu-Gadu
- Fix display of avatars after a server-side change. (Krzysztof Klinikowski)

* AIM
- Allow setting and displaying icons between 1x1 and 100x100 pixels. Previously only icons between 48x48 and 50x50 were allowed.

* MSN
- Fix CVE-2010-0277, a possible remote crash when parsing an incoming SLP message. (Discovered by Fabian Yamaguchi)
- File transfer requests will no longer cause a crash if you delete the file before the other side accepts.
- Received files will no longer hold an extra lock after completion, meaning they can be moved or deleted without complaints from your OS.
- Buddies who sign in from a second location will no longer cause an unnecessary chat window to open.
- Support setting an animated GIF as a buddy icon.
- Numerous code cleanups and memory savings.

* MySpace
- Fix a leak and crash when retrieving buddy icons.

* XMPP
- Less likely to send messages to a contact's idle/inactive resource. Previously, if a message was received from a specific resource, responses would be sent to that resource until either it went offline or a message is received from another resource. Now, messages are sent to the bare JID upon receipt of any presence change from the contact.
- Added support for the SCRAM-SHA-1 SASL mechanism. This is only available when built without Cyrus SASL support.
- When getting info on a domain-only (server) JID, show uptime (when given by the result of the "last query") and don't show status as offline.
- Fix getting info on your own JID.
- Wrap XHTML messages in p , as described in XEP-0071, for compatibility with some clients.
- Don't do an SRV lookup for a STUN server associated with the account if one is already set globally in prefs.
- Don't send custom smileys larger than the recommended maximum object size specified in the BoB XEP. This prevents a client from being disconnected by servers that dislike overly-large stanzas.
- Fix receiving messages without markup over an Openfire BOSH connection (forcibly put the stanzas in the jabber:client namespace).
- The default value for the file transfer proxies is automatically updated when an account connects, if it is still the old (broken) default (from 'proxy.jabber.org' to 'proxy.eu.jabber.org').
- Fix an issue where libpurple created duplicate buddies if the roster contains a buddy in two groups that differ only by case (e.g. "XMPP" and "xmpp") (or not at all).

* Yahoo
- Don't send and tags. (Fartash Faghri)
- Support PingBox?. PingBoxes? will appear as pbx/PingBoxName. (Kartik Mohta)

* Pidgin
- Fix CVE-2010-0423, a denial of service attack due to the parsing of large numbers of smileys. (Discovered by Antti Hayrynen)
- Correctly size conversation and status box entries when the interior-focus style property is diabled. (Gabriel Schulhof)
- Correctly handle a multiline text field being required in a request form. (Thanks to Florian Zeitz for finding this problem)
- Search friends by email-addresses in the buddy list. (Luoh Ren-Shan)
- Allow dropping an image on Custom Smiley window to add a new one.
- Prompt for confirmation when clearing a whiteboard (doodle) session. (Kartik Mohta)
- Use the "hand" cursor when hovering over usernames in chat history to indicate that the username is an actionable item.
- Double-clicking usernames in chat history will open an IM with that user.
- Put an icon on the "Filter" button in the debug window.
- Don't treat "/messages/like/this " as commands.
- Explicitly mark user interaction when inserting smilies from the toolbar so "Undo" correctly removes these smilies.
- Clicking "New" or "Saved" in the status selector menu while typing a status message no longer keeps the status entry area stuck in "typing" mode forever.
- Show tooltips for ellipsized conversation tabs. On older systems, tooltips will show for all tabs.
- The File Transfers and Debug Window windows are no longer created as dialogs. These windows should now have minimize buttons in many environments in which they were previously missing (including Windows).
- Smiley themes with Windows line endings no longer cause theme descriptions not to be displayed in the theme selector.

* Finch
- Fix CVE-2010-0420, a possible remote crash when handling chat room buddy names.
- Rebindable 'move-first' and 'move-last' actions for tree widgets. So it is possible to jump to the first or last entry in the buddy list (and other such lists) by pressing home or end key (defaults) respectively.

Auslogics Disk Defrag ScreenSaver 1.1.1.50

(2010.02.03)

What is Disk Defrag Screen Saver?
Auslogics Disk Defrag Screen Saver is a handy tool that allows users to run defragmentation of their disks in Screen Saver mode. Like other screen savers in Windows, it starts automatically when a system has been idle for a few moments.

In fact, it is a great time to run a defragmenter, as its impact on system resources won't disturb your work at all. Furthermore, due to its ability to run automatically, Auslogics Disk Defrag Screen Saver doesn't require any user interaction.

Improves computer performance while you are having a break
Disk Defrag Screen Saver will perform defragmentation automatically while you are away from your computer. Once you resume your work, defragmentation stops immediately, allowing you to continue your work uninterrupted. Disk Defrag Screen Saver will wait until your next break to proceed with disk defragmentation.

Real-time fragmentation map
While running, Auslogics Disk Defrag Screen Saver generates a well designed real-time fragmentation map. It allows tracking disk fragmentation level and overall defragmentation progress, as well as the name of currently defragmented file and its path.

uTorrent 2.0 (build 17920)

(2010.01.25)

Release Notes:
We've added UDP tracker support!
uTP has been improved significantly 1.8.5, with many bugs fixed and performance improvements. It can be found in the preferences as "Enable bandwidth management" (but don't worry, you can still control caps!).
The setup dialog has been overhauled to make it much easier to use and with a built-in speed test. More presets were added and it automatically scales settings for high-upload connections.
A new transfer cap feature has been added to track bandwidth usage, along with graphs to show your usage.

Feature Overview:
UDP trackers are a different protocol for tracker communication that uses significantly less processing power on the tracker end. It's important for us to support this because trackers have limited resources, so this should allow them to support many more users with their current hardware and not crash under the load.

uTP is an alternative communication method for BitTorrent traffic that allows the client to automatically regulate its bandwidth usage to avoid adversely impacting your internet connection. This will allow you or other users on the network to download their torrents but still allow others on the network to function with little difference. This does not require any additional setup.
In addition, uTP in this version has added its own form of STUN, a method of getting incoming connections without direct connectivity to the Internet. This allows µTorrent to punch holes through routers and firewalls to increase connectivity and improve speeds. It is even possible to connect two firewalled peers through uTP's NAT traversal feature.

The transfer cap settings were added in response to various users who have ISP-mandated caps on how much data they can download/upload in a month. Now you can track your usage in MB (with a handy graph to visualize it) and even configure µTorrent to stop torrenting once the limits are exceeded. Currently, you can configure the time interval, the data cap and whether it should stop based on only download, upload, or both combined.
As a privacy notice, this traffic data is not sent back to us or anyone.

Changes in 2.0 (build 17920)
- Change: update TCP/IP overhead estimation
- Fix: handle wrapping in uTP timestamps
- Fix: Crash in setup dialog when dialog is exited before server list is downloaded.
