Updated Packages
As with every new release, packages--applications and software of all kinds--are being updated at a rapid pace. Many of these packages came from an automatic sync from Debian's Unstable branch, others have been explicitly pulled in for 11.04 Natty Narwhal.

For a list of all packages being accepted for 11.04 Natty Narwhal, please subscribe to natty-changes: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/natty-changes

Some of the key packages making their first appearance with this Alpha 2 release are: * LibreOffice 3.3 (has replaced OpenOffice.org 3.2)
* Linux Kernel 2.6.38-rc2.
* X.org Server 1.10 and Mesa 7.10

Linux kernel 2.6.38
Alpha 2 includes the 2.6.38-rc2 kernel which is based on the latest mainline release candidate kernel at kernel milestone freeze kernel. This is a major update from the v2.6.35 in Maverick, and an update from the 2.6.37-rc3 shipped with Alpha 1. The kernel is expected to be based on v2.6.38 for release.

This kernel update includes the official inclusion of the '200 line patch' which improves responsivness for some workloads. It also brings a major update to the VFS, RCU dentry handling, which is slated to improve filesystem performance particularly with parallel loads. There are a bunch of updates for graphics which should extend support to new cards and extend 3D to more cards too. There as always is a ton of driver updates which should bring more devices into support. This kernel brings support for some previously unsupported ACER SD card slots.

Note: Just for Omap 4, the kernel used is still 2.6.35. The main reason for that is that 2.6.38 is not yet functional, but work is being made with TI and Linaro to deliver a proper 2.6.38 for this cycle.

X.org Server 1.10
Alpha 2 includes a new X stack, comprised of XServer 1.10 and mesa 7.10, along with updates to all the major drivers. New features include support for Sandy Bridge graphics, improved 3D support for newer radeon hardware, support for more OpenGL extensions, improved multi-head functionality, and of course many bug fixes.

Python 2.7
All main packages have now been built and and are installable with Python 2.7. If any incompatibilities are detected during runtime, please report them on the broken package in Ubuntu, and add the official tag 'python27' on the bug.

Ubuntu Desktop Edition
Unity is now the default in the Ubuntu Desktop session.

This is partially implemented. The Unity Launcher is now available; it can be used to launch applications that are pinned to the launcher and switch between running applications. It support Quick lists on context menu. There is a rudimentary Places implementation now, but it is still very unstable, and scroll bars and search do not work yet.

Network Manager applet has been patched to use appindicator. Putting NM-Applet through as many test scenarios as possible is appreciated! Classic Gnome panel applets are not support in Alpha 2, only Indicators.

There are now three kinds of sessions in gdm: Ubuntu Desktop will run Unity by default and the Ubuntu Classic Session will run gnome-panel. Ubuntu Classic supports all video hardware and video drivers. Ubuntu Desktop requires 3D driver support. Finally, you can force a "2D mode only" with Ubuntu Classic Session (no effect) which has the same interface than the Ubuntu Classic session.

Ubuntu Netbook Edition
In Natty the dedicated Ubuntu Netbook edition is only used on the preinstalled OMAP3 and OMAP4 armel images. On all other architectures the Ubuntu Netbook Edition has been merged with the Ubuntu Desktop Edition. The ARM version is still using the EFL launcher that we started the cycle with, we are still integrating the Unity 2D launcher, but don't expect it to be the default launcher until A3. We are still using a 2.6.35 kernel as a 2.6.38 kernel is not yet available for OMAP 4.

Software Center
The ‘Ratings and Reviews’ feature landed in the Software Center, allowing anyone with an Ubuntu Single Sign On/Ubuntu One account to submit ratings and reviews for applications. Users can also optionally share reviews via integration with social networking services added into Gwibber.

Ubuntu Server
Provisioning servers have been made a bit more easier with cobbler and mcollective now available.

Powernap has been updated to 2.0. Powernap uses a new method to reduce power consumption, seen power savings of around 14% in most cases. It can now monitor user activity (Console, Mouse, Keyboard), system activity (load, processors, process IO), and network activity (wake-on-lan, udp ports tcp ports)

The Alpha installs in most sceneries on both bare hardware and in virtual environments. Testing of the platform server, and additional server tasks is welcomed.

Ubuntu Server Cloud images
EC2 images now run on m1.small and c1.medium sizes, and t1.micro in arch amd64.

cloud-init has been updated to 0.60, new features. This feature includes support resizing of / at first boot, adds minimal OVF transport (iso) support and allow setting of hostname when first booting.

The Ubuntu Server cloud have a newer kernel inside. See the kernel section below for more information.

Kubuntu
Kubuntu Natty Alpha 2 features:
* Plasma and KDE Applications 4.6
* Phonon GStreamer backend
* GTK Oxygen Theme
* Games on the CD
* udisks/upower replaces hal

For details see the Kubuntu Alpha 2 release page.

Kubuntu will not be shipping an armel port, with the Alpha 2 release.

Xubuntu
The new gtk and xfwm4 theme for Xubuntu is now in Natty Narwhal. It is called "greybird". There is a new panel layout, including a launcher panel is in this release. The launcher panel is hidden at the bottom of the screen. The elementaryXubuntu icon theme has been updated. Xubuntu is using the Droid font for default, since it is a lightweight, good visibility font.

Xfce 4.8 is released and included:
The Xfce open source desktop is out with its first major update in two years this week. Xfce 4.8 brings the low-resource desktop into the modern era and provides usability improvements across the board. "Xfce 4.8 is our attempt to update the Xfce code base to all the new desktop frameworks that were introduced in the past few years," The Xfce development team wrote in a statement. "We hope that our efforts to drop pieces like ThunarVFS and HAL with GIO, udev, ConsoleKit and PolicyKit will help bringing the Xfce desktop to modern distributions.

Menus in Xfce 4.8 are now editable with any menu editor that meets the freedesktop.org standards. Suggested editor is "alacarte".

Edubuntu
Edubuntu is currently reviewing package selections, some packages installed in this release will not be in the final release.

The Unity session in Edubuntu is still work in progress, it's recommended to test using the Ubuntu Classic Desktop from the login screen instead.

For more details on what has changed in Edubuntu 11.04, please refer to:
http://www.edubuntu.org/2011-02-03/edubuntu-1104-alpha-2-released

Ubuntu Studio
Package Selection: The installed packages have changed. The packages shipped in Ubuntu Studio are more focused to support identified tasks and their derived work flows. Please note that this is a work in progress. If your favorite package is not include, please inform us about it and consider updating the task/work flows wiki page.

Kernel: Currently, Ubuntu Studio is shipping the -generic kernel. We are working with the Ubuntu Kernel Team to get a -lowlatency kernel into the archives which will then ship, in addition to the -generic kernel, in Ubuntu Studio. An interim -lowlatency kernel is available in Allesio Bogani's PPA.

Unity: At this point we are planning to stay with Gnome2, however since Unity (and therefore Compiz apparently) is under heavy development we expect problems. It is possible that in the future we may eventually move away from Gnome2 but substantial discussions and testing will be required.

Network: Due to continuing problems, network-manager will replace gnome-network-admin. If performance degradation is experienced, please contact the Ubuntu Studio developer via email email or on IRC (#ubuntustudio-devel on freenode).

Installation Tasks: The task selections during installation have been updated. The audio tasks have been parsed into two groups: generation and recording. The 'generation' task selections is focused more on synthesizers and sequencers (i.e. tone generation) and the 'recording' task focuses on recording live musician performances.

Known issues
As is to be expected, at this very early stage of the release process, there are some significant known bugs that users may run into with the Natty Alpha 2 Release. The ones we know about at this point (and some of the workarounds), are documented here so you don't need to spend time reporting these bugs again:

Graphics and Display
* The effectiveness of the current hibernate implementation is under discussion, and it has been disabled for now. Hibernate is not available from the GUI in Alpha 2 (710796).

* The binary video drivers -fglrx and -nvidia do not have XServer 1.10 compatibility, so do not function in Alpha 2. We anticipate receiving an updated driver with this support from NVIDIA in the coming weeks, and an updated -fglrx from AMD at some point prior to Natty's release, but do not know their exact ETAs.

* The -nouveau video driver has had an ABI change but lacked a version number increment. Following Debian we're versioning it as 'libdrm-nouveau1a'. Be aware this can cause difficulties in upgrading/downgrading from PPAs that include libdrm packages.

* The -synaptics driver has received a new acceleration mechanism. Trackpad users may notice a significant decrease (or increase) in acceleration as a result. We are investigating configuration options for this new behavior.

* Compiz can crash for some people at start, leaving them in an empty session, there is a fix under investigation (709380)

* Windows sometimes don't appear or you can have the feeling that the interface is stuck (no mouse input) but still responsive to the keyboard. This is due to (709461) and is under investigation

* Desktop freezes if new window takes focus while menu is open. (603482)

* In focused dialog, alt-leftclick-dnd doesn't always work, it selects text like if alt was not pressed. (711911)

* Layout indicator items are not being updated and not working. (711749)

* The unity migration tool crashes on a clean install at startup, the fix is already committed and will arrive just after Alpha2.

* Unity can see a slowdown when places are opened. The places in general are really a first draft (empty sometimes when opened for instance, missing icons…). (711174)

* Some people are reporting issues with LibreOffice interacting with unity.(709138)

* Have temporarily resumed using an older version of glew 1.5.2 since nux/compiz crashes when using glew 1.5.7 (711401, 711396)

Since Unity is in active development right now, please check the unity bug reports before filing new bugs.

Common Desktop applications
* Trying to access Ubuntu One in the live session or when using autologin will cause a crash. (708018)

* Some corruption being seen in xchat-gnome window. (707236)

* Jockey reports a crash on startup. (711225)

Boot, installation and post-install
* In dual boot installs, side-by-side partitioning can be overridden by the user, resulting in data loss. After selecting the "Install alongside other operating systems" option, clicking on either the "Use entire partition" of "Use entire disc" buttons will override the side-by-side partitioning and result in a loss of data. (655950)

* On the amd64 images the installer crashes after the "Who are you?" step. To work around this, open a Terminal window with Ctrl+Alt+T and do sudo apt-get purge ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu before starting the installer. This will cause the installation progress window to become very small, but avoid the crash. (710582). Similar behavior is seen in other flavors on amd64 hardware, but different workarounds may be needed, see individual flavors.

* If you are using the live-CD images, and do not have the 3D drivers installed for your hardware, you may see a message like "Sorry you don't have 3D support, install it for your graphic hardware to get Unity or please reboot and select "Classic Session" at startup.

* When Ubuntu is installed in OEM mode, the initial end-user configuration program (oem-config) will trigger a crash dialog if networking is not available. This dialog can be safely ignored. Post-Alpha 2 CDs will not present this bug.

* On some systems, Ubuntu fails to install under WUBI. (711562)

* Persistence doesn't work on liveusb. (683260)

* Boot "stalls" completely if no user input is provided. (711965)

* Ubiquity btrfs install fails to boot. To work around this 'set prefix=(hd0,msdos1)/@/boot/grub; insmod normal; normal' will get to a better prompt after various error messages, but 'root' is still wrong. (712029)

* Ubuntu desktop from usb stick freezes when the display switch from plymouth to X. (712173)

* On Ubuntu Alternate, LTSP won't work due to a nbd-client issue and a gnome-session issue. A workaround exists by removing /opt/ltsp//usr/share/ldm/rc.d/I01-nbd-update from the chroot and running "sudo ltsp-update-image". Once that's done, make sure to always select "Classic Desktop" as session type or login will fail.

Migration
* During migration from 10.10, package mysql-client-5.1 5.1.49-1ubuntu9 failed to install/upgrade. (711730)

* During migration from 10.10, package xserver-xorg-core not installing/reinstalling. (711896)

* Natty sudo upgrade prompts for conffile update and potentially removes %admin from /etc/sudoers. (690873)

Kernel
* The effectiveness of the current hibernate implementation is under discussion and has been disabled for now. Hibernate needs to be re-enabled in the kernel (710877).

* qemu-kthread become defunct on disconnect (hanging on a mutex in nbd_ioctl) (700165, 711951)

* A random kernel panic has been seen during boot, if you see it please attempt to capture a log and append to the bug. (7120821)

Software Center
* Some users are seeing software-center crash with ZeroDivisionError in _update_pagesel() (694826)

* Some users are seeing software-center crash with DatabaseModifiedError in _database_gen_postlist_iter() when browsing. (507836)

* Some users have seen a crash reported, when the program didn't actually crash. (532652)

Ubuntu server edition
* If you are using a i386 image you will not be able to use the t1.micro size. However amd64 images will work as expected. (710754)

* Eucalyptus has a dependency on a package that is not installed. This will be resolved shortly after Alpha 2. (711590)

* In a small number of cases some instances not reachable via ssh. (712026)

Kubuntu
* There are known build issues for kde with the armel toolchain. These build failures are being worked.

* KDE front end keyboard selector is broken. (Bug: 705917)

* Rekonq crashes on startup on amd64 hosts. (711513, 629079)

* on amd64 hosts, ubiquity kde_ui crashes after the "Who are you?" step. (710612)

* When restarting Kubuntu Live CD, in a language other than english, errors may be seen on screen before desktop starts. (656486)

* Kubuntu mobile images fail to load. (712061)

Edubuntu
* italc application crashes after startup. (438637)

* blinken, dhcp3-client, gcompris, icedtea6-plugin, nanny, ubuntu-edu-preschool, ubuntu-edu-primary were removed in error when upgrading from Maverick to Natty. (711904)

* LTSP won't work due to a nbd-client issue and a gnome-session issue. A workaround exists by removing /opt/ltsp//usr/share/ldm/rc.d/I01-nbd-update from the chroot and running "sudo ltsp-update-image". Once that's done, make sure to always select "Classic Desktop" as session type or login will fail.

Xubuntu
* On the amd64 images the installer crashes after the "Who are you?" step. To work around this, open a terminal, using either the shortcut in the panel or Menu button -> Accessories -> Terminal and do sudo apt-get purge ubiquity-slideshow-xubuntu before starting the installer. (710582)

* There is a bug in the "session-menu" plugin in Xfce4. To reboot or shutdown from VirtualBox, you must logout, then reboot or shutdown from GDM. (711571)

Mythbuntu
* The installer may be missing a few pages for configuration. (711991, 711772, 721021). This should be fixed shortly after Alpha 2.

* The frontend installation can't properly test against a 0.24 database.

* The XFCE defaults haven't yet been updated for the Xfce release in natty.

For a listing of more known issues, please refer to the Natty Narwhal bug tracker in Launchpad.

If performance degradation is experienced, please contact the Ubuntu Studio developer via email (ubuntu-studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com) or on IRC (#ubuntustudio-devel on freenode).

Installation Tasks
The task selections during installation have been updated.

The audio tasks have been parsed into two groups: generation and recording. The 'generation' task selections is focused more on synthesizers and sequencers (i.e. tone generation) and the 'recording' task focuses on recording live musician performances.

Package Selection
The installed packages changed as well.

The packages shipped in Ubuntu Studio are more focused to support identified tasks and their derived work flows. Please note that this is a work in progress. If your favorite package is not include, please inform us about it and consider updating the task/work flows wiki page (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio/Workflows).

Kernel
Currently, Ubuntu Studio is shipping the -generic kernel.

Additionally, we are working with the Ubuntu Kernel Team to get a -lowlatency kernel into the archives which will then ship, in addition to the -generic kernel, in Ubuntu Studio. However, a -lowlatency kernel is available for the interim in Allesio Bogani's PPA: https://launchpad.net/~abogani/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=natty

Ubuntu Server
The Alpha installs in most sceneries on both bare hardware and in virtual environments. Testing of the platform server, and additional server tasks is welcomed.

Ubuntu Server Cloud images
The Ubuntu Server cloud have a newer kernel inside. See the kernel section below for more information.

Installation
The live CD configurations are currently being reworked for the Natty deliverables. At this time, the images are a bit too large to actually fit on a CD. Please use a USB stick or DVD as a workaround.

Linux kernel 2.6.37-rc3
Alpha 1 includes the 2.6.37-rc3 kernel which is based on the latest mainline release candidate kernel. This is a major update from the v2.6.35 in Maverick. The kernel is expected to roll forward over time to v2.6.38 for release.

This kernel update includes the initial versions of FANOTIFY, KMS+KDB integration, a number of desktop related responsiveness improvements, AppArmor (upstream!), a lot of debugging tool updates, and updates for the virtualisation which should improve performance there.

In addition the kernel is testing out further responsiveness tweaks which are showing promise.

Known issues
As is to be expected, at this very early stage of the release process, there are known bugs that users may run into with the Natty Alpha 1 Release. The ones we know about at this point (and some of the workarounds), are documented here so you don't need to spend time reporting these bugs again:

Graphics and Display
* Unity has specific graphic card needs. In Alpha 1, gnome-panel (the previous panel) isn't launched in the gnome session if you don't run the default window manager. This is notably the case of an upgraded machine with "no effect" selected in gnome-appearance-properties. For those, you can try to reboot and choose in gdm the "Ubuntu Classic Session".

* The gnome-panel run from the Ubuntu classic session can have applets crashing at start with compiz enabled. One solution is to use metacity in the meantime.

Networking & WiFi
* Some users report that the wireless connection fails when switching to a virtual console. (656757)

Common Desktop applications
* OpenOffice may crash Unity, aka "compiz.real crashed when OpenOffice freeze with SIGSEGV in eventLoop()". The problem is being fixed as Alpha 1 is being wrapped, but progress on the resolution can be followed in the bug report (526642).

* CouchDB is not working in Alpha 1, and so desktopcouch is affected. This shows up as "CouchDataBase call hangs" (682866).

Boot, installation and post-install
* The splash screens on booting are still saying 10.10. It should be 11.04. (683994)

* The current live-CD images do not fit on a CD at this time. Please use a USB stick or a DVD as a workaround.

* If you are using the live-CD images, and do not have the 3D drivers installed for your hardware, you may see a message like "Sorry you don't have 3D support, install it for your graphic hardware to get Unity or please reboot and select "Classic Session" at startup.

* Although Wubi is included on several of the images, it will not work; it will try to download and install 10.10 instead. This will be fixed in Alpha 2. (684076)

Ubuntu server edition
* PowerPC and Marvell Dove images are not being released for Alpha 1.

* It is not possible to install the nodes for a Eucalyptus based cloud. (683700)

* EC2 instances of arch i386 or instance type t1.micro will not successfully boot (669496)

* The CouchDB View Server may not be working. This shows up as "CouchDataBase call hangs" (682866).

* The tasksel 'Virtualisation Host' option fails to install (683700)

* Servers using CCISS hard disk controllers are not able to install this Alpha. (684304)

Issues affecting other Ubuntu flavors
* Kubuntu
    - There are known toolchain issues for kde with the armel toolchain. These build failures are being worked.
    - Kubuntu DVD is not being shipped with Alpha 1.

* Mythbuntu
    - There are key packages still being processed through the queues. Mythbuntu is not being shipped with Alpha 1.

For a listing of more known issues, please refer to the Natty Narwhal bug tracker in Launchpad.

Reporting bugs

Qt was updated to the current 4.7 beta release.

Unity
The new Unity interface is now the default in Ubuntu Netbook Edition. This includes the global menu bar as part of the default interface. Please note that applications still retain the menu in their own window as long as the global menu bar is still being tested and fixed.

Linux kernel 2.6.35
Alpha 2 includes the 2.6.35-6.7 kernel based on 2.6.35-rc3.

This kernel includes new security enhancements. Of major note is the change the default behavior of PTRACE which is used by gdb, strace, ltrace, etc. The behavior for 10.10 is that only child processes can be PTRACEd, due to the default value of "1" in/proc/sys/kernel/ptrace_scope. This value may be inappropriate for some development systems and servers with only admin accounts. If using "sudo" for PTRACE is not desired, please change this value to "0".

New cloud-init features
cloud-init, the configurable initialization process for Ubuntu Server cloud images, has gained new features in Maverick Alpha 2, including pluggable hooks, ebsmount, ext4 support, and new stanzas in the cloud-config format.

Installation
The new btrfs file system may now be used during installation via manual partitioning, as long as /boot is on some other file system. (At the moment, this only works on the alternate and server CDs.)

Known issues
As is to be expected at this stage of the release process, there are several known bugs that users are likely to run into with Maverick Alpha 2. We have documented them here for your convenience along with any known workarounds, so that you don't need to spend time reporting these bugs again:

- Encrypted home directory creation may be broken on some images. (588705)

- When installing Xubuntu, the systray appears in the middle of the screen, with three icons flashing constantly. This prevents the installation from the live environment, and makes the desktop pretty much unusable after any installation completes. There is a workaround to this issue described in the bug report. (586012)

- Due to a kernel issue, Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud on amd64 is not able to register images out-of-the-box in Alpha 2. A fix is already available: run "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" to update to the fixed packages. (588861)

- Ubuntu Netbook Edition with Unity does not currently provide a fallback for systems without a 3D capable video driver, such as NVidia cards. (600567)

- Some AppArmor profiles, like the one from the CUPS printing system or MySQL, do not work due to a flaw in the kernel. As a workaround, disable the AppArmor profile for those services with "sudo aa-complain cups", or disable AppArmor altogether with "sudo update-rc.d apparmor disable". (599450)

- The btrfs file system cannot be used for installations from the desktop CD. It may be possible to work around this by installing thebtrfs-tools package in the live session first. (600586)

Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) Alpha 1

(2010.06.03)

Introduction
The Ubuntu developers are moving quickly to bring you the absolute latest and greatest software the Open Source community has to offer. The Maverick Meerkat Alpha 1 is the first alpha release of Ubuntu 10.10, bringing with it the earliest new features for the next version of Ubuntu.

This is an alpha release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released on October 10, 2010.

Upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
To upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a desktop system, press Alt+F2 and type in "update-manager -d" (without the quotes) into the command box. Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release '10.10' is available. Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

To upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a server system: install the update-manager-core package if it is not already installed; edit /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades and set Prompt=normal; launch the upgrade tool with the command sudo do-release-upgrade -d; and follow the on-screen instructions.

New features in Maverick
Feature development for Maverick has started. Please see the Maverick blueprint list for details.

Please test and report any bugs you find:

Updated Packages
As with every new release, packages--applications and software of all kinds--are being updated at a rapid pace. Many of these packages come from an automatic sync from Debian's Unstable branch. For a list of all packages being accepted for 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, please subscribe to maverick-changes:

GNOME
The GNOME base platform has been updated to the current 2.31 versions. This particularly includes the new dconf and gsettings API. Evolution was updated to the 2.30 version, which operates much faster compared to the version in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

KDE
KDE was updated to the current 4.5 beta 1 release.

Qt
Qt was updated to the current 4.7 beta release.

Linux kernel 2.6.34
Alpha 1 includes the 2.6.34-5.12 kernel based on 2.6.34.

Download Alpha 1

Known issues
As is to be expected at this stage of the release process, there are several known bugs that users are likely to run into with Maverick Alpha 1. We have documented them here for your convenience along with any known workarounds, so that you don't need to spend time reporting these bugs again:

- Ubuntu Netbook launcher (both the 2D and 3D variants) have an empty "Favourites" tab. Please switch to the "System" tab to find the launcher for the installer. Due to the same root cause, the panel configuration looks like in standard GNOME instead of the UNE specific setup. (588675)

- On the alternate images, the boot menu's "Rescue Mode" item shows as "Alternative desktop environments". (588221)

- The Ubuntu Server amd64 CD image is oversized and will not fit onto a standard 700MB CD. However, you may still test it using a DVD, a USB drive, or a virtual machine. (587893)

- Encrypted home directory creation may be broken on some images. (588705)

- The Audio and Video tasks are uninstallable on Ubuntu Studio images. You may install most of the packages they contain with a package management tool after installation; bitscope, mencoder, and mplayer are currently broken. (588780)

- When installing Xubuntu, the systray appears in the middle of the screen, with three icons flashing constantly. This prevents the installation from the live environment, and makes the desktop pretty much unusable after any installation completes. There is a workaround to this issue described in the bug report. GNOME
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS RC includes the latest GNOME desktop environment with a number of great new features.

Linux kernel 2.6.32
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS RC includes the 2.6.32-21.32 kernel based on 2.6.32.11.

KDE SC 4.4
Kubuntu 10.04 LTS RC features the new KDE SC 4.4. For more information about new features in Kubuntu, see the Kubuntu technical overview.

HAL removal
This release fully removes HAL from the boot process, making Ubuntu faster to boot and faster to resume from suspend.

Major new version of likewise-open
The likewise-open package, which provides Active Directory authentication and server support for Linux, has been updated to version 5.4. The package supports upgrades from both the officially supported versions 4.0 (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS) and 4.1 (Ubuntu 9.10), as well as the likewise-open5 packages from universe.

Since this upgrade involves a lot of configuration file changes and in-place database upgrades, testing and feedback is appreciated.

New default open source driver for nVidia hardware
The Nouveau video driver is now the default for nVidia hardware. This driver provides kernel mode setting, which will give improved resolution detection. This driver provides hardware accelerated 2D functionality, like the -nv driver it replaces. The nouveau driver is being actively developed upstream and we anticipate this will enable faster bug fixes for problems encountered.

Improved support for nVidia proprietary graphics drivers
Three different NVIDIA proprietary drivers are currently available: nvidia-current (190.53), nvidia-173, and nvidia-96. Thanks to a new alternatives system, it is now possible to install all three of these packages at the same time (although it is only possible to have one configured for use at a time).

Social from the Start
We now feature built-in integration with Twitter, identi.ca, Facebook, and other social networks with the MeMenu in the panel, which is built upon the Gwibber project, which has a completely new, more reliable backend built on top of desktopcouch. Gwibber now also supports a multi-column view for monitoring multiple feeds simultaneously.

New boot experience
Multiple changes to look, feel and speed of the boot experience have been included in the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Release Candidate.

New Indicators
The notification area now features more consistent user experience and design for communication, session management, and many other tasks. See the application indicators page for information on this change.

New Themes
The desktop has been beautified with the addition of two brand new themes, Ambiance and Radiance. New wallpaper and icons are also included.
Ubuntu One File Syncing

Select any folder in your home directory for sync, pick from your existing contacts when sharing folders. An updated preferences application has been added, with more features.

Ubuntu One Music Store
Millions of songs are available for purchase from your Ubuntu desktop, integrated with the Rhythmbox Music Player and using Ubuntu One cloud storage for backup and easy sync.

New features for Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC)
The Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud installer has been vastly improved in order to support alternative installation topologies. UEC components are now automatically discovered and registered, including for complex topologies. Finally, UEC is now powered by Eucalyptus 1.6.2 codebase.

Security Issue when upgrading from Lucid Alpha 2
If you installed Lucid prior to Alpha 3, you may have libmysqlclient16 7.0.9-1 installed. This package was present in the Ubuntu archive by mistake and was retracted, but because it has a later version number than the real libmysqlclient16 package, the real package will not be installed automatically on upgrade. To ensure that you have the official package installed on your Lucid system and will receive security support for it throughout Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, it is important that you run sudo apt-get install libmysqlclient16/lucid and follow the instructions.

Known issues
There are a small number of known bugs that users may run into with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS RC which will be fixed before the final release. We have documented them here for your convenience along with any known workarounds.

For a full list of errata for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, please see the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS release notes.

* LVM, RAID, or encrypted block devices are incorrectly limited to 2TiB. This issue will be resolved for the 10.04 LTS release. (543838)

* In some cases, the partitioner will fail with the error message "Unable to satisfy all constraints" when using previously existing partitions. This bug will be resolved for the 10.04 LTS release; users encountering it are advised to wait for the fix in the final release. (558382)

* Support for XFS and JFS is missing from the Ubuntu LiveCD. Users who need support for the XFS or JFS filesystems on their Ubuntu desktop at install time can install using one of the other installation media (Ubuntu alternate CD or Ubuntu DVD), or can wait for the final release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. (568024)

* A memory leak in the X server's handling of 3D rendering will cause systems that use the default compiz window manager to become sluggish over time. This bug is being actively investigated and a resolution is expected for the final release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. (565981)

* Because of the new alternatives system used for nvidia driver packages, the nvidia installer from NVIDIA's website currently doesn't work.

* Activating a RAID 1 array in degraded mode is reported to lead to RAID disks being reported as in sync when they are not, resulting in data loss. Since RAID 1 arrays will automatically be brought up in degraded mode when a member disk is unavailable, users with production software RAID 1 disks are advised not to upgrade to the 10.04 LTS Beta until this bug is resolved. (557429)

* When installing with the Kubuntu alternate CD in OEM mode, the "prepare for shipping" icon is absent from the desktop after install. As a workaround, users can use the Kubuntu desktop CD. This issue will be resolved for the 10.04 LTS release. (557309)

* If additional packages are selected for installation in OEM mode, a message will be shown at user configuration time that "An error occurred while installing packages" if no network connection is available. This issue will be resolved for the 10.04 LTS release. (539710)

* LVM, RAID, or encrypted block devices are incorrectly limited to 2TiB. This issue will be resolved for the 10.04 LTS release. (543838)

* The "Reboot now" option in the Wubi installer will sometimes fail to reboot Windows. To work around this issue, you can reboot manually to Ubuntu. (543032)

* Due to a seed issue, Edubuntu doesn't have its artwork in this release. That can easily be fixed post-installation by manually installing the edubuntu-artwork package.

As is to be expected at this stage of the release process, there are several known bugs that users are likely to run into with Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 1. We have documented them here for your convenience along with any known workarounds, so that you don't need to spend time reporting these bugs again:

* Because of the new alternatives system used for nvidia driver packages, the nvidia installer from NVIDIA's website currently doesn't work.

* The fglrx binary driver for ATI video chipsets does not yet support the X server in Lucid. As a workaround, users should use the open source -ati driver instead. (494699)

* A number of outstanding bugs prevent users of the OpenLDAP server (the slapd package) from upgrading successfully from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS Beta 1. Users running OpenLDAP servers are advised to wait until Beta 2 before upgrading. (538516, 536958)

* Configuration of "LVM with encryption" in the Ubuntu Server installer and the alternate installer fails when setting up swap. Investigation of this issue is ongoing. (539324)

* Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud 9.10 upgrades to 10.04 do not yet work seamlessly, and UEC 9.10 administrators are advised not to upgrade to 10.04 Beta 1. This problem is a high priority (519513), and is expected to be resolved for 10.04 Beta 2. This does not affect new installations of UEC 10.04, which are expected to work quite well at 10.04 Beta 1.

* Xubuntu Desktop is installed by default without language support (540878). To localize your system, after installation, go to Applications -> System -> Language Support and add your language.

* When running Kubuntu in Install Only mode ("Install Kubuntu" from the boot menu), the system will fail to reboot correctly at the end of the install. As a workaround, users can "Try Kubuntu without installing" and click on the installer icon on the desktop. (540856)

* Installation with /boot on RAID1 fails due to a bug when installing the bootloader to disk. This bug will be addressed for 10.04 Beta 2. (527401)

* If the cryptsetup package is installed as part of an install from the alternate CD, the X server may crash after boot the first time you press . To correct this problem, install version 0.8.0~-17 or later of the plymouth package from the Ubuntu archives after the initial installation. (540256)

* Wubi as included on the ISO images is unable to enter its second stage of installation, so you will not be able to install inside Windows using just an ISO image in this beta release. As a workaround, users who are installing the Ubuntu Desktop Edition can download the stand-alone version of wubi from http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/wubi.exe which includes the fix for this bug. This bug will be fully addressed for 10.04 LTS Beta 2. (541607)

* Selecting OEM installation on Kubuntu in 10.04 LTS Beta 1 does not install the oem-config-kde package required to complete OEM configuration after reboot. Users in need of Kubuntu OEM installation support are advised to wait until 10.04 LTS Beta 2. (540895)

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) Alpha 3

(2010.02.25)

Introduction
The Ubuntu developers are moving quickly to bring you the absolute latest and greatest software the Open Source community has to offer. The Lucid Lynx Alpha 3 is the third alpha release of Ubuntu 10.04, bringing with it the earliest new features for the next version of Ubuntu.

This is an alpha release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released on April 29, 2010.

Upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 or Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
To upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 on a desktop system, press Alt+F2 and type in "update-manager -d" (without the quotes) into the command box. Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release '10.04' is available. Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

To upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 on a server system: install the update-manager-core package if it is not already installed; edit /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades and set Prompt=normal; launch the upgrade tool with the command sudo do-release-upgrade -d; and follow the on-screen instructions.

New features in Lucid

Updated Packages
As with every new release, packages--applications and software of all kinds--are being updated at a rapid pace. Many of these packages come from an automatic sync from Debian's Testing branch. For a list of all packages being accepted for 10.04 Lucid Lynx, please subscribe to lucid-changes:

GNOME
Ubuntu Lucid Alpha 3 includes the latest GNOME desktop environment with a number of great new features.

Linux kernel 2.6.32
Alpha 3 includes the 2.6.32-14.20 kernel based on 2.6.32.8.

KDE SC 4.4
Alpha 3 of Kubuntu features the new KDE SC 4.4. For more information about new features in Kubuntu, see https://wiki.kubuntu.org/LucidLynx/Alpha3/Kubuntu.

Hal removal
Lucid Alpha 3 sports full removal of the hal package, making Ubuntu faster to boot and faster to resume from suspend.

Social By Default
We now feature built in integration with Twitter, identi.ca, Facebook, and other social networks with the MeMenu in the panel, which is built upon the Gwibber project, which has a completely new, more reliable backend built on top of desktopcouch. Gwibber now also supports a multi-column view for monitoring multiple feeds simultaneously.

Issue when upgrading from Lucid Alpha 2
If you installed Lucid prior to Alpha 3, you may have libmysqlclient16 7.0.9-1 installed. Known issues
As is to be expected at this stage of the release process, there are several known bugs that users are likely to run into with Lucid Alpha 3. We have documented them here for your convenience along with any known workarounds, so that you don't need to spend time reporting these bugs again:

    * On video hardware that supports KMS, the live CD sometimes does not reboot successfully, instead displaying the boot logo indefinitely. To work around this, you will need to power down the system manually. Investigation of this issue is ongoing. As a workaround, users can boot from a USB stick instead of from a CD. (506418)

    * When running on Ubuntu Server, the plymouth boot splash screen does not exit after the system is booted. To get to a console login after boot, you must press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to VT1. Work on correcting this for the 10.04 release is ongoing. (506297)

    * Console keyboard selections made at install time may not be correctly respected on reboot, leaving users with the default US keyboard map. This issue affects all images, but is mostly of concern to users of Ubuntu Server. This bug is expected to be resolved shortly after Alpha 3. (524439)

    * OEM setup mode does not work from the Alpha 3 Desktop CD, because the post-reboot configuration tool is not present. As a workaround, users can use the alternate CD for OEM installs. (527641)
